In this second edition of Care and Restoration of Barometers, Philip Collins draws on almost 40 years’ experience of working on antique barometers to show how to restore old instruments and thus increase their attractiveness, usefulness and value. With the aid of some 175 illustrations, he describes in detail the steps involved in restoring a wheel barometer from first dismantling the instrument, through the cleaning and repair of parts, refitting the mercury tube, case repair and refinishing to final reassembly. Separate chapters deal with the special problems that can arise with stick or cistern tube barometers, aneroid barometers and barographs. Advice is also given on how to handle and maintain antique barometers, once restored.ContentsPreface Acknowledgements/Caution 1 Wheel Barometers 2 Mercury Tubes 3 Dismantling a Wheel Barometer 4 Cleaning and Repair of Wheel Barometer Parts 5 Case Repairs and Refinishing 6 Reassembling a Wheel Barometer 7 Stick or Cistern Tube Barometers 8 Aneroid Barometers 9 Barographs Appendix 1: Tools and Equipment Appendix 2: Formulae and Special Preparations Bibliography Index Details ISBN: 978-0-948382-16-1 235 x 155 mm viii + 152 pp 175 illus. £9.95 (paperback) First edition published 1990; reprinted 1993, 1999 Second edition published 2016 About the author
